Product Manager, Commercial

This opportunity is to innovate and develop commercial products for some of the UK’s fastest growing major digital news brands.

As consumers move at a rapid pace towards mobile devices, Trinity Mirror is undergoing an even faster digital transformation and growth. During 2013/14 engagement and usage of digital products such as and more than doubled, and we already see a higher proportion of mobile users from mobile devices in the fastest-growing part of the market.

However, our current 44% increase in digital revenue year-on-year is only the start, and in 2015 we are creating a specific workstream to develop new commercial product revenue in areas such as native advertising, mobile advertising innovation and the development of new content verticals and partnerships across our apps, websites and responsive mobile products.

The successful candidate will work within this team and alongside our sales team to deliver new advertising solutions and other developments which exploit all the opportunities that this rapidly growing environment provides.

Further context and objectives:
This new role is reporting to the Senior Commercial Product Manager in the digital product team of Trinity Mirror, which is responsible for the Mirror and several regional digital products. The key areas of focus are:

Display advertising and how to maximise engagement and revenue, especially on mobile devices as the audience makes this the dominant digital platform for our content.
Ensuring our advertising works to the satisfaction of our customers, by identifying improvements to processes and technology which supports it.
Working closely with the sales teams to understand future requirements, sitting with them and attending relevant meetings when new advertising requirements are being developed.
Working closely with the Ad Ops team to ensure a seamless relationship between the product which enables advertising and the operational trafficking of campaigns.
Engage with all regional and national centres to understand the nuances between agency vs direct sales.
Developing new advertising formats, including native advertising, to generate revenue and pay for our digital journalism.
Working with the commercial partnerships and other teams to launch and support different revenue-generating features and functionality across our websites and apps.

Main Responsibilities:
Defining and developing product strategy for display advertising and new advertising formats basing this on strategic business vision and market/user insights
Continuous improvement of our display advertising offering, prioritising key improvements and enhancements
Optimising the revenue generating potential of all Trinity Mirror’s digital properties, including desktop sites, responsive sites and mobile apps
Understanding the differences between national vs local markets
Assisting and deputising for the Senior Commercial Product Manager to ensure the requirements of sales and other commercial teams across the group are prioritised and delivered to build digital revenue.

Commercial success of our ad offering, making sure it remains reliable and competitive
Communication with key stakeholders inside and outside the organisation
Revenue optimisation from display advertising
Adherence to product budget and compliance with organisational policies

​Technical Skills/Knowledge to be demonstrated:
Able to identify, understand and react to advertising market trends
Demonstrate knowledge of the digital advertising, media sales and online publishing industries
Able to make decisions based on market research, data analysis and commercial objectives
Understand the needs of different product users
Able to guide products through their life-cycle
Understand and make use of Agile methodology
Understand relevant technologies and business practices (such as ad serving software, programmatic networks, software engineering, content management, commercial and editorial operations, project management, user experience and design)

Online advertising and media sales
Ad networks, real time bidding, programmatic trading
Project management methodologies including Agile
Business development – including forecasting
End to end product delivery

Managing commercial and contractual relationships

Creative and analytical thinking, organising and planning
