Job Introduction
BBC Digital is looking for a dynamic product manager to direct our media player engineering effort, with responsibility for delivering the next-generation of BBC media players across four screens – mobile, tablet, desktop and interactive TV platforms.
The BBC’s award winning media player is at the heart of the BBC’s Digital output and this exciting opportunity will take the lead on delivering the strategy to build upon that success. The media player is at the core of the Digital proposition for BBC News, Sport and iPlayer as well as many other initiatives and handles over 200 million play requests per month in RTMP, HLS, HDS and MPEG DASH. Our aim is to deliver highest quality media playout on all devices and to give our audiences rich interactive experiences.

Main Responsibilities
You will be responsible for delivering well-factored, reusable, scalable products and services which align to some key departmental architectural principles and product outcomes. You will also be responsible for leadership and delivery at every stage of the product lifecycle, ranging across product planning, performance measurement, and iterative development.
Key to the role is providing a product vision, directing multi-disciplinary software engineering teams to deliver it, inspiring creativity and providing guidance. Just as importantly, you will understand registration systems from a user’s perspective, have experiences of optimising systems to maximise conversion, and will be able to speak with knowledge and experience about the best way to use identity management to improve BBC Online for everyone. You will work to clear, numerical KPIs and have the support and autonomy to succeed against them.

You will be expected to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
• Demonstrable experience managing and developing digital media products and services – including defining product roadmaps and long-term plans.
• Several years’ experience specifying, developing and deploying architectures and infrastructure for software applications in a new media multi-tiered application stack.
• Significant experience working within new media, broadcast, or related media sectors.
• Extensive experience managing senior stakeholders up to Director/Board level, communicating and influencing decision making through oral and written presentations, proposals, specifications, and reports.
• Broad knowledge of relevant technologies, HTTP, HTML5, Flash (ActiveScript), JavaScript; media streaming technologies and protocols including RTMP, HLS, HDS, MPEG DASH, SmoothStreaming and some experience at the application level in data security, social media tools, content management, media playout and streaming.
