It’s a really exciting time here at NewsNow and this is where you could help.
The opportunity has emerged for a permanent, full-time product manager to join our team; someone who can help us to ‘get it right’ through their passion and excitement for our business and their ability to inspire this in the rest of the team.
This is a new role for us, as to date our founder has provided product input to developers alongside his many other jobs. We have now identified new opportunities on the horizon that would be best served by a dedicated product manager who can offer complete commitment to managing every movement of our product’s development and a devotion to optimising the product to achieve our goals.
As the role is new, there would be a substantial opportunity for you to define responsibilities and design practices that suit both you and NewsNow. We expect that you will have the vision to identify and evaluate proposed product developments and test these both formally and informally with internal and external users. You will work with developers, the editorial team and the founder to define projects which are compelling to our users but also achievable and profitable. You will also prioritise work, and check that newly finished features match expectations, whilst being able to channel multiple points of view, influence team morale in accomplishing shared goals, and promote an environment of achievement.
You will play a major part in our continuing success through your zest for software development and the user experience, combined with a strong sense of responsibility towards our business objectives.
We have the tools you need to succeed. We run an iterative development cycle, and use agile techniques. Our ‘one-click’ deployment mechanism and high traffic rate means that, where appropriate, we can release features or partial features rapidly to get meaningful user feedback and adjust our plans. For instance, we are A/B testing multiple look and feel changes on the site right now. We would like you to help us accelerate and improve our feedback loop.
Areas where we look forward to expanding NewsNow’s capabilities and reach include:
– Community involvement in NewsNow through rating and sharing mechanisms
– Bringing news to users no matter where they are, through email newsletters and mobile notifications
– A whole new look for NewsNow with an engaging, visually rich home page and topic pages
– We would love you to add to this list and experiment with more new ideas once you get to know us and our users.
We welcome applications from those with relevant experience (e.g. at least one recent role as a technical product manager or similar experience in UX or in leading web development). It’s particularly good if you’ve been a PM within a small agile team, ideally in a startup or startup-like environment. Experience in publishing or high-volume web sites is also a plus.
About the company
NewsNow is the UK’s largest independent free-to-web real-time news aggregator. A one-stop shop for news for 15M unique monthly visitors, we aim to be the best site on the web for those seeking news from all the angles. We have been running stably and profitably since our start in 1997. Since 2009, we’ve been experiencing even greater commercial success as an industry leader in programmatic advertising technologies.
We are always looking for new ways to reward the loyalty of our massive fan-base, and to grow our reach to new people seeking news from all the angles. We are a driver of quality in the news media and today set editorial standards for much of the content we link to.
We run very lean, with just 10 staff. About half spend their days in our office near Euston, while some work remotely and visit the office periodically. Our compact set-up lets us keep hierarchy and bureaucracy to a minimum and allows employees to exercise lots of initiative and explore new ideas, even outside their normal roles.
NewsNow is also very proud to be the first digital member of the DEC charity’s Rapid Response Network, which helps alert the UK public efficiently to its vital emergency fundraising appeals.
Benefits of working for us include:
26 days holiday allowance (plus bank holidays)
