As a Product Manager at Pesky Fish, you’ll be part of a friendly, supportive, and collaborative Digital team that works across every part of our platform and helps us modernise one of the biggest global supply chains.

About Pesky
Pesky was set up with a single ambition: to create an economically and ecologically sustainable industry for fish, fishermen and consumers. To deliver it, we are building a global supply chain where any fisherman can sell to any customer with 100% transparency.

Today, Pesky is a digital market for British inshore fishermen – enabling skippers to sell their catch to all buyers in the chain. By helping these buyers source catch directly from the boats, we are not only redefining their experiences of fresh fish, but enabling fishermen to achieve higher, stable and more sustainable values for their catches. We also operate two ports in the UK, and have a thriving D2C offering.

Following the Covid crisis, our network of both boats and buyers has increased dramatically. As a result, we are heavily investing in our team and technology to expand our network to ports and buyers across the country and beyond.

What you’ll be working on
Our digital offering began life in Pesky’s own port and marketplace operations. We eat our own dogfish, if you will. We are starting the journey to scale and modularise to meet the ambitions of the business, and allow it to incrementally add value to existing ports and marketplaces. We have plans to be national by the end of the year, and be international in the next.

Within Digital, we have two main strands of development… FishOps and The Marketplace.

FishOps tracks the physical movement of fish so we know where every crate came from, where it currently is, and where it’s going.

The Marketplace manages inventory availability, takes orders in, and enables the commercial (e.g. invoicing, packing and shipping, paying the boats) and regulatory (e.g. reporting to the MMO and export certification) aspects.

As a Product Manager, you will work on both strands initially. As we grow and the art of the possible grows with it, we expect our PMs will focus on one, without losing site of the either.

Our users are both internal (Pesky colleagues, working in operations and sales) and external (from fishermen to buyers across the value chain, from wholesalers to restaurants to consumers just like you.) Both the supply-chain operations and the marketplace mechanics require an appreciation for both sides of every transaction, as well as Pesky’s role as facilitator. We look for solutions that are win-win-win.

About the Team
You’ll be joining our current team of 6 (or more by the time you read this), growing to 10-12. Digital is a blend of developers, UX, and this role – product manager, operating as one.

We own our own roadmap, support the applications we take live, and generally take responsibility for the outcomes we commit to. We are a young team, and our Ways of Working are developing towards XP-style agile (e.g. continuous delivery, delivering outcomes rather than features, Done means in production and users are satisfied), with a healthy dose of Lean thinking.

Our users interact with our systems in a variety of ways, including via the web, a bespoke app, and 3rd party integrations. You will share in the responsibility of unifying the experience.

About You (Mindset and Approach)
* You are an active voice of and advocate for our users and our mission
* You are inquisitive and like to learn new skills and to broaden your expertise
* You actively share knowledge and learnings with the team and the broader organisation.
* You are comfortable working in a startup. Directions can change quickly and decisions are made with less than perfect information.
* You see diversity as an opportunity to broaden your horizons and to discover new ways to be inclusive
* You work hard to maintain an open and transparent dialogue across the business, and encourage everyone to constructively engage with decision-making.

About You (Skills and Experience)
We are looking for Product Managers with a demonstrable track record of delivering Products and Solutions that have been well-received by their constituents, and can speak to your role in the process. As key functions of the role, we expect you to…
* Build and revise roadmaps that are based on unlocking value more than defining features
* Seek out opportunities to add value amongst sometimes competing constituencies
* Take responsibility for the complete experience across all of our users
* Become knowledgeable of the issues and concerns facing the entire fishing industry in order to appreciate our base and help steer Pesky’s priorities in the future.

The more you can demonstrate your willingness to take on responsibility and be accountable for the results, the more senior we view you. Alongside that, we strive to be a learning organisation. Part of seniority is the ability to encourage and nurture that, so we look for the ability to mentor and lead by example.

Experience in any of the following isn’t necessary, but will help you hit the ground running….
* Delivering a roadmap that iteratively transforms an analogue process to new, digitised ways of working
* Creating Value Streams and Wardley Maps, especially for a Marketplace
* An appreciation for the differences between B2B and B2C offerings, particularly in trading-off UX choices between “Ease of Learning” and “Ease of Use”

We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19 and are still working out our back-to-the-office plan.
