Software Product Owner – UL
Thousands of us around the world wake up every day with a common purpose: to make the world a safer, more secure and sustainable place. Science is in our DNA; we are endlessly curious and passionate about seeking and speaking the truth. We take delight in knowing that our work makes a meaningful contribution to society, and we are proud that our culture is centred on integrity, collaboration, inclusion and excellence. UL stands at the forefront of technological advancement, and we are continually challenged to find new ways to foster innovation and positive change. Satisfying? Yes. Exciting? Absolutely!
The Environment & Sustainability team’s mission and passion is to advance global sustainability. We believe that environmental health and safety around the world are a 21st-century safety challenge and through our work, we aim to bring positive change.
We test & certify products to meet our health and sustainability standards. World’s leading businesses come to us to support their transition to more circular approaches and carbon management. We develop software platforms that help our clients track and measure environmental, supply chain, health, and safety management and sustainability data.
As our global footprint continues to grow, we are looking to hire a Software Product Owner who will work directly with our software development teams to deliver products that meet the needs of our customers.
What you’ll learn and achieve:
•Work with internal stakeholders (including Product Roadmap owners) and directly with clients to refine high-level requirements. Client work may involve helping define their process journey from “as-is” through “to-be”. Ensure that non-functional requirements are identified and brought within scope.
•Manage a backlog of product requirements to target the highest value/size items first. Items will originate from multiple workstreams including the Product Roadmap owners, Project Managers, Software Architects, Configuration and Support teams.
•Participate in Sprint planning and make decisions when re-prioritisation or requirement changes are needed in flight. Ensure transparency across the organisation by keeping agile artefacts up to date.
•Work with Product Architects to facilitate high-level sizing, determine the approach to solutions and groom stories with the Development Teams until the “what” for delivery, and measurable acceptance criteria are clear and documented. Help developers understand requirement context and product vision. Facilitate Development Team acceptance of story readiness and medium level sizing (story points). Sign off on story delivery.
•Facilitate knowledge transfer to internal teams such as Solution Engineering, Implementation, Technical Communications and Product Support. This could involve organising or giving training or demonstrations, or the writing of (non-client facing) documentation.
•Where a large client project will be delivered in stages, support Project Managers in giving demonstrations and obtaining business and client sign off at each milestone. Share feedback internally.
What makes you a great fit:
•A relevant degree or equivalent experience gained through additional years working in IT
•Can grasp complex technical models quickly and challenges the “norm”
•Able to reduce complex issues to succinct and simple forms, process-oriented
•An excellent communication and meeting facilitator
•Exceptional attention to detail
•Comfortable and effective in influencing without authority
•Makes pragmatic decisions in situations of risk and uncertainty
•A good understanding of the software development lifecycle
•Understanding of the Agile Scrum, Kanban and Waterfall project approaches
•Shows initiative, self-motivated, pro-active
•Logical and objective
