Primary Engineer develops a range of hands-on Design, Technology and Engineering education projects, teacher training programmes, competitions and resources. We use great engineering themed ideas that are beautifully crafted to develop in young people the practical, technical, creative and ‘soft’ skills needed to understand and pursue careers in engineering and the wider STEM landscape. We believe in the endless curiosity and creativity of young people and aim to significantly increase the number and diversity of young people pursing STEM, particularly engineering careers by creating programmes that can be adopted and used in every school.

We are looking for a mid-weight Product Manager to shape, develop and grow our products and lead our product team to help us create even more innovative products for the pupils, teachers and industry partners we serve and continue to improve our existing ones.

What you’ll be doing:

You will develop, shape and grow the product department – it’s team members, methodology and ways of working to ensure we have a motivated, healthy team doing great work.
You will lead the development of an evidence-informed, customer-centric product vision, strategy and roadmap and will empower your colleagues to meet their clear measurable goals, working towards our company mission.
You will lead collaboration and internal comms with partnerships , marketing, service delivery, ops and partners to transform customer insight into a viable product roadmap.
You will develop product metrics such as forecasts and budgets.
You will lead project management within the product team, project managing the most complex projects, and design the project management practices undertaken by other product team members.
You will work with business development, marketing, service delivery and operations to ensure a product has everything it needs from your team to get to market successfully.
You will lead defining product structures and pricing models.
You will understand our market, developing ways to capture data and research insights to inform decisions.
You will seek out and develop (new and existing) partnerships that can elevate our brand and our ability to do great work and produce great products.
You will lead a 4-year collaborative development project with a key partner.
You will understand and develop our competitive position.
You will work with key customers to develop your knowledge of current and future customer needs.

Skills and Experience:

We know that no one is the finished article, and learning is an important part of any fulfilling role – however, we believe the following skills and experience criteria are important for success in this position.

You have experience in a similar position; you have been a product manager for multiple product lines, supported a product team to success, researched, defined and executed product strategies and roadmaps, project managed large-scale, complex projects, and have affected and managed significant growth.
You have embodied the values and culture of the organisation – leading by example to rally colleagues around a shared vision.
You are a collaborator and are adept in working across disciplines and experiences to run co-design product development projects.
You know how to persevere through ambiguity with positivity and can support your team’s journey too.
You have an interest in design and technology/engineering and education and are confident in contributing ideas to and running product development projects for products that develop essential engineering skills in pupils (and develop teacher pedagogy) in creative ways.
You are evidence-informed and customer-centric – and are experienced in directing research activities to understand the market, evaluate products, find new ways of doing things and make informed business decisions.
You are results orientated – you challenge the status quo to bring positive business benefits.
You are pragmatic and know when to take ownership of tasks and when to delegate.
You are experienced with various project and product management methodologies and know what works best for a given situation.
You are a leader within the organisation and are committed to being a leader outside of the organisation too – you are a confident and effective communicator and an ambassador for best practice in your field and for Primary Engineer.
You are friendly and professional and can manage successful relationships with co-design partners, contractors and co-workers
You are an effective collaborator across departments, working with service delivery, marketing, partnerships and operations to maintain and capitalise on product success.
You are endlessly curious, appreciate great design and derive great joy in making beautiful products that really work!

Bonus skills and experience

You have an interest in tinkering and design – you like to take things apart, build things and solve practical problems in creative ways.
You have experience developing and managing development of digital products.
You have experience working with remote colleagues – and can form effective and positive relationships with team members with limited in-person contact.
You have a degree/advanced education in an education, engineering, product or design and technology discipline.
You have qualifications in project management, product management, education, design, leadership and/or strategy.
You have successfully managed development of digital products to market.

Our customers love our products – our evaluation surveys show 90% teachers highly rate the resources we provide and 96% of teachers agree that as a result of our training they understand the impact they have on children’s career aspirations and understand the benefit of including engineering in the curriculum.
We have a remote working culture, with 44% of our staff working remotely with regular expense paid trips to meet in person. We have a large office in Burnley Lancashire, and a small base in Glasgow. As the product department develops, their location is tbd.

Terms:
The post is full-time at 37.5 hours per week
Hours of work will be Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 16:30
29 days holiday including bank holidays.
