Senior Product Manager – Editorial Tooling

Full-Time London, UK Salary: £70-75k

We are News UK: a company full of talented, dedicated and creative people. We are an ambitious and ever-growing organisation with a passion for storytelling, capturing moments, meaning and magic to make sense of the world. Our newspapers reach more than 30 million people each week and include The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times. News UK is also home to Wireless, a leading UK and Irish media company boasting independent local and national radio stations including talkSPORT, VirginRadio, talkRADIO and Times Radio.

We are Technology: a department that has people and product at its heart. We use technology to innovate and lead the global conversation on the future of journalism and storytelling. We proudly are part of TechCharterUK as over 27% of our Tech roles are filled by gender minorities.

Your team: Content Platforms – a team of passionate people responsible for the editorial tools that allow News UK titles to deliver the most trusted and compelling journalism in the world. Our tools encompass everything from planning and management, through authoring, curation and distribution of content.

Your role: As a Senior Product Manager for Editorial Tooling you will drive the vision, strategy and roadmap for the editorial tools used by News UK journalists on one of our titles. You will work closely with editorial leaders, product teams and engineering experts to deliver the tools they need to implement their strategic vision, and power some of the UK’s leading journalism.

Day to day you will:

be responsible for the product strategy and roadmap for editorial tooling – driven by deep understanding of editorial needs, wider business and product strategy, engineering requirements and industry knowledge.

build close stakeholder relationships with product teams, business leaders and commercial stakeholders and look for ways to support their strategies through our tooling. Your objectives are driven by their goals.

work closely with newsroom leaders and users to identify opportunities and goals for our tooling, providing them with insight and expertise to help guide decision making on best tools.

lead a team of engineers, UX and delivery experts to experiment, iterate and prioritise the roadmap based on business value and measurable goals agreed on with key stakeholders.

be able to provide a clear articulation of the product vision, features and functionality to stakeholders and the wider organisation to get buy-in.

be tool agnostic, weighing the best tools on the market against building internal solutions in order to meet the needs of our titles. You can understand and synthesise needs from market research, consumer insights, analytics and competitive insights, market potential, trends, problems, and opportunities to inform your strategy.

be comfortable in a newsroom, bedded in with the journalists using the tools every day. You understand their pain points and challenges and can translate them into impactful solutions.

build out metrics to measure the value and impact of our tools, and use them to drive decision making and aid communication.

What we’re looking for from you:

An experienced product manager with a highly collaborative approach to product development, working closely with editorial, product and technical stakeholders in the title to make sure you are constantly driving value for them and aligning with their strategic roadmaps.

Comprehensive understanding of the news / publishing industry through either working directly in Editorial or alongside Editorial in a technology capacity

Adept at leading a collaborative, cross-functional team, inspiring them to consistently deliver quality products with speed and creativity.

Strong at prioritisation with a track record of keeping teams focused on what delivers most value.

Strong negotiation, organisational and facilitation skills. An excellent presenter with exemplary outcome-based meeting skills.

What’s in it for you? We are a diverse and dynamic team, with opportunities to learn and develop your skills in a supportive environment. We are remote first although we do have an amazing office, a flexible working pattern and a great team culture. We’ll help you deliver your best work and grow you with career and personal development through training, conferences and courses.
