London, Blackfriars – Hybrid working

We are recruiting for a Delivery and Product Manager (Centre for Collective Intelligence Design).

About Nesta’s Centre for Collective Intelligence Design
Nesta’s Centre for Collective Intelligence Design helps create new ways for communities to use technology to harness their insights, ideas and power to act on the problems that matter to them and create the futures they want. We know well-designed systems can help promote healthy collective action at scale, but too often technology is designed to solve the needs of individuals or large organisations.

Our mission is to design digital tools and products that allow communities to respond collectively to challenges, and that help public and voluntary sector institutions strengthen trust and collaboration with citizens.

We work with Nesta’s mission teams and external partners to help them understand where and how collective intelligence approaches can help address the problems they’re working on. We apply collective intelligence design – which brings together insights from diverse groups of people, with new sources of data (such as sensor or mobile phone data) and digital technologies (including AI) – to develop bespoke solutions to those problems. We use rigorous research methods to test, learn and evaluate each solution.

You’ll be a critical member of the Centre for Collective Intelligence Design team, overseeing the delivery of projects large and small, from one-off demonstrator projects to larger programmes supporting a number of innovation labs. You’ll be responsible for helping run the agile rhythms and rituals of our projects helping project teams deliver on time, on budget and to high standards. You’ll support the Directors with project resourcing and scoping of deliverables. And support project team members to prioritise and manage their time optimally.

As a Delivery Manager, you’ll be experienced in agile delivery on a diverse range of projects. Not limited to just technology, you’ll be able to apply agile methodologies to projects across the board. This will range from training programmes that support other organisations to design and apply collective intelligence, to software development where we build collective intelligence tools that harness people’s insights.

You’ll have excellent project management skills, know when to challenge and when to listen, you’re always proactive and an excellent problem spotter and fixer. You’ll be able to build relationships with clients at a senior level, helping to ensure the smooth delivery of projects. You are skilled at supporting diverse teams of designers, researchers and software developers to work effectively and creatively together for maximum impact.

You’re also motivated by building and embedding processes, tools and cultures that make teams work well together, and by supporting and coaching colleagues to adopt new agile working practices.

In the first year of this role, you will oversee major projects with the United Nations Development Programme – developing a new digital platform for government accountability in Cambodia, and supporting a network of accelerator labs to design and test collective intelligence digital solutions to the climate crisis. You will also manage the roll out of a new product which aims to help councils in the UK and their communities imagine a net-zero future.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • delivery management on a diverse range of projects as part of the Centre for Collective Intelligence Design’s services offer with responsibility for leading multiple projects at any given time
  • agile project, product and delivery management, ensuring our projects are delivered on time and meet client requirements
  • contributing to project strategy; helping shape the direction and vision of projects
  • managing the rhythms and rituals of a multidisciplinary design team, helping the team collaborate, communicate and learn throughout delivery
  • driving change; ensuring our clients and our team is fully aligned, engaged effectively during our projects and receive excellent service from our team
  • reporting on project activities, risks, burndown, budget spend and priorities to external clients; the Directors and other internal stakeholders
  • ensuring we estimate and use our team’s resources on projects effectively, proactively helping to address any bottlenecks individuals or the team might be facing
  • providing quality assurance of team deliverables, and managing director and client-level sign-off
  • inspiring the teams you work with and being excited by the projects you manage; you’ll need to be creative and able to keep people motivated when the going gets tough
  • supporting the Centre for Collective Intelligence Design management team in all operational matters like project resourcing and quality control
  • communicating about the Centre for Collective Intelligence Design when meeting with stakeholders
  • planning, delivering and facilitating workshops with clients and users, pulling together the right people and tools – ensuring agendas and follow-up actions are circulated in a timely manner
  • leading the team’s approach to agile project and product management, and providing the support to embed these systems, tools and cultures across the team.
  • supporting business development activity ranging from the proposal and tender writing through to networking and pitching

Your experience and mindset:

  • a track record of planning and managing projects in an agile environment, ensuring that projects keep to within time and budget
  • able to see the bigger picture, and provide strategic thinking that supports clients/leaders with decision-making, and helps the project team manage risks and clarify priorities
  • experience of managing projects involving multi-disciplinary teams
  • the experience and confidence to operate in a fast-paced environment, and ability to support others to do so too
  • the financial acumen and attention-to-detail for robust budget management and monitoring
  • an ability to anticipate problems and proactively develop strategies or tactics to address them.
  • coaching others in new ways of working and approaching agile delivery, including developers, designers and frontline staff
  • a range of experience in designing and delivering change within large and complex organisations, both in delivering new services and building technology that supports those services
  • interest in digital technology and how it can be applied to services and organisations
  • the ability to be creative in developing new solutions and approaches, looking outside for inspiration where needed
  • be willing to travel in the UK or overseas, and be prepared to stay overnight on occasion

  • A track record of successfully leading teams through the full product life cycle. Experience of identifying which tools and techniques should be used at each stage, and developing sustainable support models. An ability to identify and deal with potential risks across or between all stages of the product life cycle.
