This role is an initial 12-month fixed term contract, with a view to move to permanent.

The Product Owner will work collaboratively with the Head of Product on our energy systems modelling software to collate, analyse, prioritise and translate requirements into user stories and detailed specifications for implementation by front-end and back-end development teams.

The role also involves working with the Senior User Researcher, energy systems modellers, engagement analysis and domain experts across the business to make important product decisions and deliver best in class products for our users.

This job is perfect for a product owner early in their career with an interest in sustainability and tech-for-good, and a desire to work in fast moving, green-tech startup environment.

Short-Term Goals for Product Owner – 6 months after joining

  • Prioritise and deliver features for our main product the Model Builder to expand the range of customisable inputs

  • Work with the systems modelling team to write detailed specifications for the model business logic

  • Work with the development team to develop TZ’s Python client to allow programmatic interaction with the model-builder tooling

  • Work with the data teams to ensure the data dependencies for the software products are delivered on time

Long-Term Goals for Product Owner – 12 months after joining

  • Expand the model-builder functionality to cover additional energy-modelling frameworks and increase the range and flexibility of its use cases

  • Work with data teams across the business to streamline the incorporation of new data into TransitionZero’s API

  • Continuously monitor usage data and utilise insights from user research to make improvements based on user needs and product goals


Reporting to the Head of Product and working closely with the Head of Platform and the development team, the main function of this role is to be responsible for the product backlog, organising sprints and to be on hand to answer questions from developers as needed. On a day to day basis you’ll be expected to lead on:

  • Backlog refinement – develop and communicate the product goal, create and clearly communicate product backlog items and order the backlog to maximize business value.

  • Prioritisation – weigh priorities and making trade-offs according to the needs and objectives of end users and stakeholders.

  • Sprint planning – maintain clarity around the product vision despite the changing and fast-paced nature of Agile product development.

  • Technical spec writing – take initiatives from the Head of Product, break them down into stories or actionable chunks of value and work with the Platform team to implement.

  • Analytics and reporting – create Mixpanel reports and dashboards, analyse data for user behaviour and make recommendations for improving the product

  • Documentation – write documentation and keep the TransitionZero documentation site up to date for developer users

  • New product initiatives – work with the product team to scope out and deliver new product initiatives
