Principal Product Designer

Auto Trader UK has changed dramatically over the last decade. Evolving from the UK’s favourite used car classified magazine, to a 100% digital business with millions of consumers and thousands of retailers using our applications and sites each month. We are a company constantly striving to improve and aim to be brilliant at everything we do for our customers, consumers and our employees.

As a Principal Product Designer, you will be involved in every aspect of the product development process, from discovery through to delivery. Helping to drive forward the consumer apps, and websites used by millions of car buyers each month.

You will be responsible for leading product design within a small cross functional team or teams. You will contribute to strategic decisions with the rest of the product team. You will give and welcome feedback and criticism from other team members and designers to continually improve our experiences and build continuity across multiple platforms.

As a Principal Product Designer, you will partner with product managers, engineers, and researchers to drive our products through both discovery and delivery tracks; you will clearly articulate the difference between design thinking and design craft and identify when and where each discipline is needed.

You will run and participate in design workshops and sprints; as well as design, prototype and test ideas with your team and in more formal testing environments.

You will also be part of the broader design team – learning from and helping others & identifying and implementing improvements to the way we work.

So, what are we looking for?
An individual contributor at the top of their game. Although you will not directly manage people, you will be a design leader, coach and mentor to other designers within the design team. You will be able to influence, persuade, and evangelise design across the organisation. You’ll have strong communication skills, and the ability to synthesise different perspectives.

You will have demonstrable experience with end-to-end product design, including researching, prototyping, testing, and working intimately with developers & QA to bring products to life. You will probably have a portfolio featuring examples of interaction design work, sketches, storyboards, prototypes, and visual design.

We offer a competitive salary with a great flexible benefits package which includes 25 days holiday, pension, healthcare, life assurance and a whole host of other benefits! You’ll get a Mac and as much free tea, coffee and fresh fruit as you like! Our awesome offices are located in Kings Cross London, with fantastic transport connections.
