About this role

We’re looking for an energetic and enthusiastic Senior Digital Product Manager to own and drive the RA’s digital product roadmap as we embark on a major project to update our website UX and Infrastructure.

The covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of digital platforms across the arts and entertainment sector; we have big digital ambitions and the Senior Digital Product Manager will be key in driving these efforts. The day to day work spans all elements of the product lifecycle from user-research and advocacy, to specifying digital optimisations and collaborating with the development team in delivery sprints, to monitoring the impact of optimisations.

This is a chance to join a creative, sociable, supportive and hard-working team, and to contribute to meaningful digital change at one of the world’s major art institutions. You will be working in an agile and collaborative environment and will have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of products and platforms from our high-traffic public website, to ecommerce checkouts, and the internal platforms that support our curators and exhibition planners.

Key Objectives

  • Own the development and delivery of the RA digital roadmap
  • Lead the development of new digital products and the optimisation of existing digital products to help achieve the RA’s artistic and business goals
  • Responsible for product strategy and delivery of a major website UX and infrastructure upgrade project in 2022, in partnership with the Senior Digital Project Manager and Tech Lead, and answering to the Head of Digital Product and Infrastructure
  • Digital product evangelist responsible for ensuring that all RA stakeholders (from curators to developers) understand the vision behind our digital products and their role in creating something which works beautifully.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Product roadmap and product strategy

  • Own the digital product roadmap, and work with stakeholders across the organisation to agree priorities and define future product strategy
  • Proactively monitor the success of product deliverables, and report on this in regular product reviews – suggesting optimisations as appropriate
  • Oversee delivery of new product development and optimisations for digital products across the RA product suite: including but not limited to the website UX / Infrastructure project, Summer Exhibition Explorer and TNEW / Tessitura
  • Hold regular product strategy and roadmap reviews with stakeholders across the organisation
  • Act as an internal expert user and product evangelist for the RA product suite.

User research and analytics

  • Work with stakeholders and developers to understand and analyse user needs and to problem solve solutions. Use appropriate tools to assist with this.
  • Ensure efficient set up across Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and Google Data Studio and use these tools effectively to inform user research and the measurement of product success
  • Develop, deploy, monitor and optimise user research and A/B tests, in partnership with third-party consultants as appropriate
  • Plan and conduct market research into trends affecting our users and their needs, in partnership with third-party consultants as appropriate.

Sprint planning

  • Lead the sprint planning process in collaboration with the Technical Lead to manage the prioritisation and delivery of new development, in particular the web UX and Infrastructure project
  • Oversee the creation of user stories, and brief the development team on these
  • Oversee the work of the broader Digital Product & Infrastructure team in defining acceptance criteria for pieces of development; plan and run QA tests, approve features and products for release.

Line management

  • Line manage and provide mentorship for the Digital Product Manager, the Digital Project Manager (Young Artists’ Summer Show) and the Digital Assistant
  • Oversee the work of all direct reports
  • Manage the work of additional third-party developers, UX specialists and other consultants as appropriate

Person Specification

Knowledge and experience

  • Knowledge of Agile working methodologies; experience in leading a scrum team would be desirable
  • Fluent in the use of Google Analytics and other online analytics tools, and able to demonstrate their successful use in measuring and optimising product performance
  • Proven experience in the successful use of techniques for user research and requirement gathering: interviews, questionnaires, workshops and other tools
  • Highly attentive to detail, and experienced in managing QA processes; able to test new web features quickly and effectively
  • A demonstrated passion for good digital design and UX
  • Experience of owning and developing a complex digital roadmap is desirable
  • Experience with using JIRA, Trello and other workflow management tools
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS is not required, but is a plus.

Skills

  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple deliverables and prioritise effectively
  • Good leadership and influencing skills
  • High level of digital literacy; able to learn new systems and digital tools quickly
  • Flexible approach to work and a hands-on approach.
