THECB is seeking a user-centered, inquisitive, and collaborative UXUI design lead to join a product team that is setting the standard for state education digital tools – helping educators, families, and students reach their goals. The design lead will ensure THECB products are informed by user and market research, fit the agency’s strategic plan, and delight with quality design.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) is committed to delivering and managing a suite of high-quality public-facing digital products that contribute to the state’s strategic goals around student outcomes. The UXUI Design Lead will join an agency-wide product team that helps ensure that all THECB mass-market products are informed by user and market research, meet user needs, fit strategically within the agency’s offerings and technical infrastructure, and ultimately delight with quality design. The UXUI Design Lead will manage the design needs for products within the mass-market portfolio and contribute towards the development of new products and their adoption within different market segments. THECB product team is setting a new standard for state agency digital products and helping educators, families, and students reach their goals. Work is performed under limited supervision with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. This position reports to the Director of Product Management.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaborates with Product Managers on gathering customer and user insights and feedback.

Creates sketches, wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups to communicate concepts, facilitate discussion, and solicit feedback among users, stakeholders, and the team
Collaborates with Product Managers to setup and run experiments – gathering feedback and data to help define solutions.
Defines design requirements and delivers production-ready assets to the development team.
Consistently reviews all TXOC digital products providing UX UI guidance and helps maintain design consistency across all products.
Incorporates interaction design best practices and marketplace standards into solutions.
Works to ensure visual and contextual consistency with brand standards.
Builds out and maintains the design system library.
Provides design guidance for other organizational partners and initiatives.
Performs related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong user-centered design skills and understanding of how to unite user needs with the organization’s goals.
Sketch, InVision, Figma or similar design tools for design and prototyping.
Deep understanding of web and mobile design constraints.
Can jump from high-level concepts into detailed design conversations.
Collaborative and communicative.
Can deliver and receive constructive criticism comfortably.
Strong sense of curiosity – consistently iterating and improving designs, skills, and processes.
Understanding of common software project management practices and Agile development.
Proactive, self-sufficient and professional, with strong organizational and time management skills.

Required Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Two years’ experience as a UXUI designer.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Track record of designing, innovating, and releasing successful products within the education sector
Knowledge of statewide and national education policies, trends and innovations.
